Four Star listings hold an average between 4.0 and 4.9, and for most buyers this is the sweet spot of the whole directory. A company here has satisfied the large majority of its customers while still showing the ordinary imperfection that comes with real trading history. Crucially, a four-point-something average is usually built on a meaningful number of reviews, which makes it far more statistically reliable than a perfect score drawn from a handful of jobs.
In hoarding and clearance work, the four-star band tends to contain the established operators: firms with proper vehicles, trained crews, waste carrier registration, insurance, and enough administrative structure to answer the phone and send a quote the same week. They have handled enough difficult properties to give accurate estimates, and enough sensitive situations to know when to slow down and let a resident make a decision at their own pace.
Read the negative reviews in this band with particular attention, because they are informative rather than damning. A company at 4.5 with occasional complaints about scheduling is telling you to pin down the date in writing. One with occasional complaints about final invoices is telling you to fix the price and the overage terms before work begins. These are manageable risks, and knowing about them in advance turns a good company into a smooth job.
Compare listings within the band by volume as well as score. A firm at 4.2 with three hundred reviews has demonstrated consistency across years of trading; a firm at 4.8 with eleven reviews has demonstrated a promising start. Neither is automatically better, but they represent different kinds of evidence. If reliability matters more than anything else — a probate deadline, a landlord check-out, a safeguarding case with a fixed date — weight the volume heavily.
This band also rewards a site visit. Companies at this level almost always offer one, and it is the single best predictor of how the job will go. Watch how the assessor talks to the resident, whether they ask what must be kept rather than announcing what will be thrown, and whether they explain the process in plain language. A crew that handles the survey with patience will handle the clearance the same way.
Before you book, get the essentials in writing: the scope room by room, the disposal route for each stream of material, the treatment of donations and any items of value, the crew size and expected duration, and the total price with clear terms for what happens if the volume turns out larger than estimated. Ask for waste transfer notes on completion. With a four-star company these requests are routine, and a reluctance to meet them is a warning worth heeding.
